Put Your Health First: Planning Ahead

planningBy Clinical Dietitian Carson S. Garoni, MS, RD, LDN, Duke Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery

The holidays are a joyous time to spend with family and friends. However, amongst the gift-giving, twinkling lights and celebrations the holidays often bring inevitable temptations. The best defense for putting your health first this holiday is to plan ahead.

Try out these planning tips.

  • Eat three meals and one to two snacks (at least three to four hours apart) each day. Include lean sources of protein to help prevent low blood sugar and possible hunger. Avoid skipping meals in preparation for a large meal.
  • Stay hydrated. Aim for 64 ounces of decaffeinated and low or no calorie beverages daily. Consider carrying a portable water bottle with you when leaving your house.
  • Remember what you want most when faced with momentary wants.

Come back Monday, December 16 for part II of Carson’s Put Your Health First.
