4 tips to reduce your risk of a fall

fall riskDid you know more than 300,000 older people fracture a hip each year, and less than half will return to their previous level of mobility?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 90 percent of hip fractures are caused by falls. Hip fractures due to falling are serious injuries that often result in long-term disability.

You can take a few small steps to reduce your risk of a fall.

  • Exercise regularly to improve your strength and balance.
  • Have your doctor or pharmacist review your prescription medications, over-the counter medications and herbal supplements to identify potential side effects that may cause dizziness or drowsiness.
  • Get your vision checked yearly by an eye doctor and update eyewear as needed.
  • At home:
    • Make sure handrails for stairs, inside and out, are in good repair.
    • Add grab bars to the shower, tub and next to the toilet.
    • Make sure there is proper lighting throughout your home and at all entrances.
    • Remove clutter and throw rugs so you don’t trip.
    • Move items you use frequently to a waist-high surface.
